Rumors
October 24, 2007 08:51 AM
Dear Parents and Students of FBC,
There have been several rumors going around FBC about Staph infections. I have personally investigated the one incident in question, and I can report that there are no known cases of Staph infection or contamination of Fredericksburg Ballet Centre students, staff, or property at this time.
I understand why you would be worried, as many of you have received letters from your children's school concerning the same matter. Let me reiterate what the Director of the Rappahannock Area Health District say's. There is no epidemic of MRSA (Methcillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, a drug-reistant strain of staph) in the area.
I would like to pass on what all the health professionals are stressing. Three methods of good hygiene that can help prevent the spread of any such disease:
- Wash your hands often
- Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered
- Disinfect any equipment/locker rooms often
Parents may have seen many of my staff members wearing blue gloves and wiping down barres, door handles etc... This is a normal part of our cleaning, but the staff and I at FBC are more vigorous in our efforts during the Fall and Winter seasons because it is Cold & Flu season. Not because we had an infection. We use products such as Lysol and Clorox that kill bacteria and Staph, so hopefully we will never have a problem. If there comes a time that I am notified about a contagious disease, please rest assured I would notify all the parents at FBC, close the studio and take whatever measures necessary. As some of you can testify, over the years the FBC staff has notified parents about head lice, chicken pox and pink eye. This is a fact of life with children, and we will always keep you informed.
The rumor mill was working overtime. The minute I found out about this, I went straight to the source. Now I am sharing that information with you. I hope this will clarify the reality from the rumor.
Ms Jen
PS I want FBC to be a happy and positive place for our students to learn to dance. Gossip and rumors aren't helping that.
